ADC Commends 639 Student Arts Ambassadors

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (ADC) organised the 2nd Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme to commend students from local primary, secondary and special schools who have demonstrated excellence in and commitment to the arts. A total of 639 students were appointed as arts ambassadors.

 

A recognition ceremony, co-organised by the ADC and the Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 2, was held today (3 July) at Queen Elizabeth Stadium to praise the efforts of the student arts ambassadors. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Suen Ming-yeung, Michael, Secretary for Education and ADC's Chairman Mr Ma Fung-kwok.

 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ma Fung-kwok said the Scheme aimed to provide opportunities for the youngsters with arts talents and promote the importance of arts in nurturing the next generation. "We hope to broaden the vision and artistic experiences of the arts ambassadors by encouraging them to take part in different types of arts activities," he said.

 

The officiating guests inaugurated the ceremony by decorating a colourful rainbow, which symbolises the diversity of arts. Other officiating guests include Mr Ko Tin-lung, Chairman of Arts Promotion Committee of ADC; Ms Emily Mok Fung-yee, ADC's Council Member; and Mr Tai Keen-man, Acting Deputy Director of Broadcasting.

 

Following the inauguration ceremony, there was an array of performances staged by the arts ambassadors and artists. These included:

- Renowned huqin player and recipient of the Award for Best Artist (Music) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2009, Wong On-yuen, and the arts ambassadors jointly presented the Erhu ensemble

- A Cappella singing performance by the local A Cappella group "ORANGE" and the arts ambassadors

- A ballet duet by Leung Lok-hei of CCC Chuen Yuen College and Tang Ho-kay of Caritas Wu Cheng Chung Secondary School

- Guided by Kim Sum Cantonese Opera, four arts ambassadors staged a traditional Cantonese operatic excerpts form "The Legend of Purple Hairpin"

- A piano duet by renowned pianist and recipient of the Award for Young Artist (Music) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2009 Rachel Cheung and Liu Tsz-hong from Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2

- Directed by The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection, the arts ambassadors staged a multi-media performance

- Through screening of a video produced by the arts ambassadors with the guidance of Ms Lam Chui-hung, teacher of QualiEd College, the ambassadors demonstrated how the arts can influence others

- Pop singer Leo Ku collaborated with arts ambassadors in a choral singing performance.

The ceremony came to a finale with a declaration ceremony. Led by Mr Michael Suen, Secretary for Education, the ambassadors made a pledge showing their commitment to the arts and to share the joy of arts with others. Each arts ambassador will receive a $500 scholarship and a certificate of commendation as appreciation of their efforts.

The ADC launched the 2nd Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme to recognise students with artistic excellence and enthusiasm and encourage them to contribute their arts talents to the community.

This year, the response was overwhelming with a total of 639 students from different primary, secondary and special schools enrolled as arts ambassadors. Over the past few months, they participated in arts activities including creative arts workshops and sharing of arts experience in television, radio programme and newspapers.

During the summer vacation, the arts ambassadors will participate in various arts activities including:-

- "Theatre Magic" co-organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to introduce the backstage facilities of theatre productions.

- "Dialogue with Arts Maestros" will invite renowned artists such as media artist Hung Keung, visual artist Lam Tung-pang, A Cappella Group "Gay Singers" and Mandy Yiu from the local musical group "Actors Family" to share their lives and experiences as artists with the students.
